Juan Miguel Carmona
"Habichuela" was born in Granada in 1960. He began his apprenticeship as a
guitar maker at the age of 13 with Manuel Lopez Bellido. Later he studied
with the guitar makers Antonio Duran and Eduardo Ferrer. After doing his military
service, he apprenticed with Francisco Manuel Diaz, but also frequented the
workshops of Antonio Marin and Rafael Moreno. He made his first guitars when
he was 17, giving them as gifts to Eduardo Ferrer and to his uncle. By the
age of 22, he had mastered his craft, and established his own workshop. As a
guitar maker, he has closely studied the instruments of master Spanish
luthiers-- Antonio de Torres, José Ramirez, Santos Hernández, and Marcelo
Barberos. His flamenco guitars are patterned after the
latter. He uses wood that has been cured and dried for 10 to 15 years for the guitars he
builds. Carmona has sold his flamenco guitars to such greats as Sabicas, Juan Habichuela,
Pepe Habichuela, Yerbita, Tomatito, Manuel Cano, Manuel Delgado, and Ketama. |
