Francisco Montero Aguilera
 |
The Spanish
guitar maker Francisco Montero Aguilera was born in La Roda, Sevilla in 1928, and is the brother of Juan Montero Aguilera.
In 1948, the two brothers moved to Córdoba and began making classical and
flamenco guitars. In 1963,
because business was poor in Cordoba, Francisco decided to move to Barcelona, and
establish his own workshop there. Francisco Montero's workshop soon became a
Mecca for flamenco guitarists such as Manolo Sanlucar, Manuel Cano, Jose
Luis Rodriguez, Pedro Sierra, and Manolo Franco. He
builds very high quality classical and flamenco guitars of great power and
sonority using only woods of the highest quality that have been aged and
dried for many years. He makes two classes of instruments, 1a models and
special highly adorned models as shown. As he is an individual luthier
working alone, using traditional methods, and building by hand with proven
designs, his production of guitars is limited to at most 18 instruments a
year. Francisco Montero's
stature among luthiers is such that Luis F. Leal Pinar devotes an entire chapter in
"Guitarreros de Andalucia" (2004) to him.
