2006 Hermanos Conde Professional Concert

This
fine professional flamenco guitar is from the original Hermanos Conde shop on
Gravina which is currently run by Faustino's widow. The Hermanos
Conde, (Faustino, Mariano, and Julio) were trained by their uncle Domingo Esteso
(1882-1937), one of this century's greatest guitar makers. The Gravina shop's master craftsmen
continue to build the same models of classical and flamenco guitars that made the Conde name famous.
This guitar offers the qualities that the Conde Hermanos made famous: great
playability, and the dry bark and responsiveness that flamenco players love.

2008 Jose Ruiz Pedregosa Coral Concert Flamenco Guitar.
The coral wood (a
deep red African hardwood) produces a sound brighter than cypress, but has
the hardness and weight to give it the power one expects from a flamenca
negra. This is one of the most exciting flamenco guitars we have,
beautiful flamenco tone, and edge, low fast action. I expect this maker to
become very hot. I have compared
José Ruiz Pedregosa's flamenco guitars head to head with that of flamenco
Gerundino Fernandez and found that I liked
that of Jose Ruiz Pedregosa more.

Rafael Moreno Concert Flamenca Negra Guitar.
This
Granada based luthier is one of the top up-and-coming makers from
Andalucia. Pepe and Celin Romero have recently acquired several of his
instruments and expect to see several more top players playing them in
the future. This flamenca negra guitar has three piece beautiful back made of
Indian rosewood.
The Hauser style hand engraved Rubner tuners. Rafael tells me that he lent this
guitar to his good friend Pepe Habichuela to do a concert. Unfortunately,
Pepe put a couple of nail marks on the top. Although Rafael has polished over
them, and they are barely visible, if one knows where to look, they can be
discerned. Consequently, we have discounted this guitar by several hundred
dollars. This is one of the strongest flamenca negras to come through in a long
time. It has a wonderful voice, great color, trebles that strike out, basses
that are firm and crisp, and true flamenco rasp.

Antonio Raya Pardo Concert Flamenco Guitar. When
I first saw this guitar in Granada a few months ago, Antonio Raya Pardo had just
finished building it, but had not yet applied the finish. We strung it up, and
played it for the first time. It was a canon, a monster, an extraordinary
flamenco guitar with great power and projection. I bought it on the spot. Its
back and sides are made of Koa wood, which like spruce is light weight, but
produces a guitar an fantastic palette of color, yet still flamenco in tone,
with great duende. Antonio has fitted this guitar with mechanical pegs, that
feel like real pegs, but are extremely smooth, and work without slippage. The action is very comfortable, and
it is a real joy to play.

This concert

trebles are clear and concentrated. The basses are firm. The balance
between trebles and basses is excellent. All of this, in a very musical
instrument-- that possess all the qualities one expects in a great

2007 Felix Manzanero Concert Flamenca Negra Guitar.
All the woods employed
in building this guitar have been aged at least 30 years. The German
spruce used for the top is outstanding, and Indian rosewood is superb. Felix
Manzanero is one of the handful of outstanding luthiers to come out of the
Ramirez workshop in the 1960s (such as Bernabe, Contreras, and Mario Tezanos),
and is widely considered among finest flamenco guitar makers in Spain. This handmade concert flamenca
negra guitar not only
is an absolute gems of the luthier's art, but has the power and tone one expects
in a great flamenca negra: profound basses, rich incisive trebles, and an
aggressive flamenco bark. I picked this one out myself in Madrid on my most
recent visit to Spain.

1998 Miguel Malo Concert Flamenco Guitar.
Born in Madrid in 1943, the Spanish
luthier Miguel Malo was introduced into the world of guitar makers at an early
age. In 1959, Miguel began as an apprentice at Ramirez, as a pupil of
Paulino Bernabe and Mariano Tezanos Sr. He also was trained by and later worked
with such veteran luthiers as his uncle Antonio Martinez Ortega and Alfonso de
Benito. Because of his aptitude within 6 months he had built his first
bandurria; and within another year he had made his first guitar without
assistance. In 1962, at age 19, because of his fast progression and skill, Jose
Ramirez promoted him to a oficial de primero, or master craftsman. Miguel
continued to work for Ramirez until 1993 when financial troubles at Ramirez
forced him and many others to become independent craftsmen, and setup their own
workshops. This handmade professional flamenco guitar was built by Miguel Malo
in 1998. The label is signed, dated, and numbered, no 17. It is in excellent
condition. According to its owner, it has no cracks, and needs no repairs. The
action is comfortable, but there is sufficient bone in the saddle to adjust the
action if desired. |

1968 Jose Ferrer Flamenco Guitar.
Infrequently
seen instrument by famous Granada maker, Jose Ferrer (1926-1976), son of Eduardo
Ferrer, built during his Palma de Mallorca period. Build towards the end of his
career, eight years before he died. Although not very visible in the pics, there is a very thin back stripe of
light colored wood matching the thin light wood of the purfling. Just
re-polished in matte lacquer by German Vasquez Rubio for a very vintage look..
Four repaired grain checks in lower to mid-portion of back that have been
cleated with radiused grafts by GVR.. Probably just humidity related. Face is in
perfect condition as are sides. No dings, nicks, gouges, or string burns
anywhere. New full clear golpeador. The owner reports it has lots of volume!
Excellent flamenco rasp. Very handsome appearance.

marks, string burns, or repairs. Looks brand new. Incipient grain check in
lacquer immediately adjacent to bass side of fret board but does not appear to
penetrate through the wood. Gustavo Vasquez Rubio said to leave it alone.

flamenco, Guipuzcoa, in the Basque provinces!) He reports: Excellent, earthy
flamenco sound. Good volume and projection.

Ancelmo Solar Gonzalez was born
in 1918 in Valle de Nalon, and as a self-taught luthier was already winning
prizes at Expositions for his guitars by 1938. In 1943, he moved to Madrid and
went to work for Santos Hernandez, who unfortunately died soon afterwards.
Ancelmo, however, continued to build guitars for Hernandez's widow until 1948,
when he decided to open his own workshop. This flamenco guitar is a wonderful
example of his work. While it received a wound to one side, it has been expertly
repaired. Note this guitar is currently in

1957 Marcelino Lopez Nieto Concert Flamenco Guitar.
Born
in 1931, Marcelino López Nieto was a cabinet maker before becoming a guitar
maker. He was drawn into making guitars, because he was studying with Daniel
Fortea, and wanted a fine guitar, but could not afford one. He established his own workshop in Madrid in 1949.
Marcelino is a complete luthier, and makes not only fine classical and
flamenco guitars, but historic guitars and ancient instruments. He is also
one of only five living Spanish makers included on Summerfield's list of the
finest guitar makers since 1800. This flamenco guitar, no 145, which was made in 1957 has back and sides of cypress, German spruce top, machine heads, and like
old flamenco guitars a tap plate made of maple. The guitar has been recently
restored and repolished by German Vasquez Rubio, including a re-fret job,
splining two cracks below the bridge, and adjacent to the fingerboard. He also
repaired a whack crack on the base side on
the lower bout, and refinished the guitar using French polish for the face, and
lacquer for back, sides, neck, and headstock. The finish is in perfect
condition. Although hard to see in photos, the owner reports it has a new tap-plate. This
guitar posses the unique signature sound of Marcelino's flamenco guitars.

1973 Jeronimo Peña Fernández
Concert Flamenco Guitar. Jose Pena Fernandez (b.
1933) is a well-known luthier in flamenco circles, and his guitars are
played by such great flamenco players as Monolo Sanlucar, Manolo Escobar,
and Enrique Montoya. Jeronimo Peña Fernandez, who is among the few
luthiers to whom Luis F. Leal Pinar devotes an entire chapter in
"Guitarreros de Andalucia" (2004) is now semi-retired, and no longer
exports, although he continues to build instruments for collectors. He is
also trained Jose Ruiz Pedregosa. This guitar has been used by flamenco
players so bears the usual signs: nail marks, particularly noticeable in
front of golpeador (tap plate), shallow capo marks on the back of the
neck. There is enough bone in the saddle so that the action can be lowered
further if so desired. The neck is straight, there are no cracks, nor does
the guitar require any repairs.

1962 Jose Ramirez 1a Concert
Flamenco Guitar (M.G.)
This guitar was made by Manuel Contreras while he worked for Jose Ramirez.
Stamped with Manuel Contreras's encircled initials: "M.G." on the foot of the
neck. It is identical in every respect to that featured on pp.98-99 of Sheldon
Urlik's book on Fine Spanish Guitars - and, is probably in better condition.
Totally flawless and original. The best you will ever see. Comes with original
case in excellent condition, original polish cloth, unopened case key envelope,
as well as a brochure in Spanish and English on proper guitar care from the
Ramirez shop, inscribed with original owner's name ("Q. Cunningham" of
Tennessee), the present owner bought it from his estate. The son told him that
his deceased father bought it new at the Ramirez shop on a trip to Spain.
Featherweight - only 1080g fully strung (70g lighter than Urlik's at 1155g!)
(1080g = 38.1oz = 2.4lbs) The present owner reports that it has crystal clear
trebles, (esp the 3rd - the traditional weak link); beautiful hallmark
early-'60's Ramirez flamenco tone, fast action with no buzz, (unless you really
dig in). Lots of volume. |
