Although the label says
Jesus Escobedo, this concert classical guitar is really the collaboration between three
brothers, Jesus, Jaime, and Gerardo Escobedo Hernandez. The eldest,
Jaime, was born in 1959, and began his apprenticeship with Francisco
Nambo when he was sixteen. Subsequently, he participated in workshops
given by Antonio Raya Pardo and Thomas Humphrey, and has built guitars
for the National Conservatory in Mexico. His brother Jesus, born in 1959
as well, also apprenticed with Francisco Nambo from the age of 15. He
received additional training in the workshop given by Antonio Raya
Pardo, and in 2000, won 1st place in the Feria Nacional de la Guitarra
in the category of concert guitars. Gerardo, the youngest, has learned
his trade from his brothers, and in 2000 placed 2nd in the Feria
Nacional de la Guitarra in the category of popular guitars. Although not
copy, this guitar is inspired by the design principles of Paulino
Bernabe's Imperial model. This is particular evident in the bracing
system used on the back. Among the other nice details, this concert guitar has
cypress lined sides like the Ramirez traditional 1a model. It also
employs a twelve hole bridge, which permits a sharper break angle for
the strings as they cross the saddle, producing greater downward force,
and more volume. There is also a substantial block of rosewood inlayed
under the fingerboard to prevent warping. Both in workmanship and
tone, this guitar compares favorably to many guitars that would sell for
twice the price. The guitar has the volume one expects from a concert
instrument--it is open and responsive, well-balanced between basses and
trebles, wonderful clarity, and has an absolutely lush, rich, colorful
tone.
