The Spanish luthier Arturo
Sanzano began his career in
1963 in the workshop of José Ramirez III, first as an apprentice of Manuel
Contreras, and then under Paulino Bernabé, who was the head artisan
and foreman of the Jose Ramirez workshop at the time. By the time he was 19, he
had been promoted to the category of official, that is a master craftsman. In 1984, after 21 years in the Ramirez workshop, Arturo set
out on his own, opening a workshop on Ronda de Segovia. His guitars have
been placed in the hands of artists like Juan Carlos Gomez, Jose Luis Rodrigo,
Victor Monje "Serranito," Oscar Herrero, Trio Cardossa, Jose Luis Encinas,
Carsten Gröndhal, and played at many famous competitions. Apart from being
among the founders of the prestigious "Guitar Course in Comillas" (Cantabria) he
has been honored by the International Music Festival Martin Códax, to have their
"Guitar Competition Arturo Sanzano" bear his name. He has taught guitar
construction courses-- on concert, flamenco, and romantic guitars for six years as part of the
workshop Ronda de Segovia in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria sponsored by the
Island's government. In 2004, he gave construction courses in Seoul Korea sponsored by the
School "In Sheo", as well as at the Municipal School of Music "El Capricho-Barajas y
San Salvador" in El Salvador. He has
been a sponsor and jury in numerous courses and competitions in Spain. At
present Arturo combines building professional guitars in his workshop with the directorship
of the "Arturo Sanzano Technical School of Artisan Guitar Construction" located
in Toledo, near Madrid, that makes his escuela models.
