Although Hermann Hauser Sr. (1882-1952)
is widely known for his guitars in the Spanish tradition, which he began
to make with Segovia's encouragement after meeting him in 1924,
Hauser had been building guitars, lutes, and other related instruments
in the German tradition since 1900. While Hauser's early work does not
yet command the astronomic prices of his latter instruments, I consider
these instruments to be good investments as only limited numbers
survive. This unusual and rare seven-string guitar is a fine example of
his early work.
It has been recently restored and has
several repaired well repaired crack on the top. Although the instrument
has been re-polished, and the restorer went to great lengths to
match the color of the original French polish. The restoration also
included also required a small patch in the lower bout near the endpin.
Three tiny holes were filled to replace a trapeze tailpiece which had
been installed at some point in the past, a new bridge was fashioned,
and one brace was replaced. The result is a great playable instrument ,
and one that both players and collectors may covet.
