The Spanish luthier
Domingo Esteso Lopez was one the guitar great makers of the early 20th century
to come out of the shop of Manuel Ramirez. After Manuel Ramirez died, he
opened his own shop on the calle Gravina, where he was joined by his 13 year old
nephew, Faustino Conde in 1926. After his death in 1937, Domingo's widow (Vda)
took over the shop, and Faustino and his two brothers, Mariano and Julio
continued working for her building under the label Vda y Sobrinos de Domingo
Esteso (Widow and nephews of Domingo Esteso) which they signed Conde Hermanos.
Overall, this guitar is in very good condition.
There are a few expertly repaired cracks on the back
and top, these repairs were done by Manuel Rodriguez (according to a second
label)
in Madrid
in 1956. There are a few small
scratches and dings, but nothing serious. The
neck is straight, and has one of the nicest setups for flamenco I have ever
seen-- about 2mm at the 12th fret. This guitar has
the wonderful, dry flamenco rasp, and soul that made Conde
Hermanos
world famous. This rare guitar
would be a great instrument for any player, and a wonderful addition to
any collection.
