Arcángel Fernández destined to become one
of the greatest flamenco guitar makers in the work was born in 1932. He
began his apprenticeship in 1954 with Marcelo Barbero. When his master
died in 1956, Arcángel and Manuel Rodríguez set up shop on the calle
Jesús y María where Arcangel Fernandez made guitars under his own label. After
Manuel left for Los Angeles in 1959, Arcángel was joined by Marcelo's
son, Marcelo Jr. The two men continue working together to the present.
Arcángel's fame and reputation are such that he has not taken new orders
for many years, and still has a long waiting list. His guitars rarely
come on the market.
This flamenco guitar, no 75 in his obra, was made in 1958. Over all this
guitar is in remarkable condition. There a few hairline cracks on
the back and top which were expertly repaired by Ivor Marants music in London
some 10 years, and do not affect the sound. The golpeadores (tap plates)
have come off leaving marks on the finish underneath. There are a few
small scratches and dings on the sides and back. Again nothing serious The neck is straight, and the action is set up for flamenco. This
would be a wonderful addition to any collection, and a great instrument
for any player.
