Historically, Masaru Kohno (1926-1998) was the most important luthier to emerge from Japan/ He was born in Mito City, Japan in 1926.  In 1948 he graduated from the Tokyo College of Arts and Crafts with a degree in woodcraft, and began building guitars. After meeting Segovia in 1959, he decided to go to Spain to study Spanish construction methods, and in 1960 spent six months at the workshop of Arcangel Fernandez. Even though neither could speak the other's language, some how they managed to communicate. Masaru's apprenticeship basically had him  quietly–-but attentively--observing Arcangel work. Obviously, given his previous experience, this was enough, and upon his return to Japan, he quickly developed a following among Japanese guitarists. In 1967, his work gained international attention, when one of his guitars won a Gold medal, at the Elizabeth's Concourse International Guitar Building Competition in Belgium juried by Ignacio Fleta, Robert Bouchet, Joaquin Rodrigo, Alirio Diaz, among others. Among the players who have used Masaru Kohno guitars are Julian Bream, Oscar Gighlia, and Sharon Isbin.

This guitar, the model Special, was the top of the line of guitars built by Masaru Kohno.
