Marcelino López Nieto, (b. 1931), has been building guitars since 1947, now with more than a sixty-five of experience, is one of Spain's most respected and accomplished luthiers. He is one of only five living Spanish makers included on Summerfield's list of the finest guitar makers since 1800. Although, he confesses that as a luthier he is largely self-taught, he credits having learned much the theory of his craft from the widow of Santos Hernandez in whose workshop he hung out regularly. He also worked for a time (1971-75) making guitars for Hernandez y Aguado. This guitar, no. 889, in his obra, Marcelino wrote me is based on the famous "Leona" that Antonio Torres made in 1856 (FE04). Marcelino repaired the Leona in 1980 as so took the opportunity to make a copy. Like the original this guitar's sound possess an intensely Spanish and Romantic character. The dynamic range and palate of colors it offers is remarkable.  The basses have rich harmonics and are profound. The mid-range is strong. The trebles are clear, rounded, polished, and intense.
