The firm Petitjean was one of five fine and large workshops in Mirecourt, known for high quality craftmanship. The firm was established in Mirecourt in 1780s by two brothers who with their three sons, and some workers, and made guitars for some 60 years--passing from baroque guitars with five courses to six-string romantic guitars, from guitars with pegs to guitars with machine tuners. They exported many guitars to Spain and even England. The elder Petitjean (l'aine) who signed his work Petitjean L'aine a Paris, despite being a Mirecourt luthier, probably to enhance his prestige. This guitar is signed simply Petitjean a Paris.
