The Spanish luthier Juan Miguel Gonzalez was born in Almeria in 1947, and is widely recognized as one of the great flamenco guitar makers living today. He began making guitar in 1960, apprenticing with his father, Miguel Gonzalez Abad (1906-1989), known as "El Cojo." His father, a well-respected guitar maker learned guitar making from Hermanos Moya Almería, who in turn had been taught by Antonio de Torres. Thus, Juan Miguel’s indisputable mastery is firmly rooted in Almería’s tradition of guitar making. Never satisfied, Juan Miguel continues to build upon this tradition, he continues researching new materials, new techniques and methods of assembly, as well as seeking to improve his guitar’s acoustics, ergonomics and aesthetics by listening to the opinions of professional guitarists about possible lines of improvement. His work combines masterfully craft, innovation, technology, research, dedication and care; and in the noble materials, wood and tails specially selected, the refined and the high acoustic sound level. His guitars have a special duende professional flamenco players seek and love. To name but a few of his clients: Tomatito, Norberto Torres, Monolo Franco, Carlos Piñana, and El Niño de la Manola.
