The luthier Manuel de Soto y Solares maintained a close professional relationship with Antonio de Torres during their years in Sevilla, with their workshops just a few doors apart on Calle Cerragería. When Torres retired from guitar making and returned to Almería in 1870, many who sought instruments in his distinctive style turned to Soto y Solares, who continued the tradition with remarkable skill.
Soto y Solares attracted a distinguished clientele, including the legendary flamenco singer Juan Breva (1844–1918), who favored one of his guitars made between 1870 and 1890. Francisco Tárrega, a towering figure in classical guitar, also held Soto y Solares’ work in high esteem—so much so that he gifted two of the luthier’s guitars to close friends as tokens of gratitude.
This Manuel de Soto y Solares flamenco guitar is in remarkable condition for its age. The finish remains beautifully preserved, with only minimal surface scratches and no visible marks, burns, or signs of abuse. The neck is straight with no warping, and the action remains comfortable. Some bone is revealed on the 1st and 6th strings (approximately 18–20 mm), typical for a guitar of this period.
There are a few minor cracks that appear to have been professionally repaired over time, though no major repairs are known. The original friction pegs were replaced with machine tuners at some point in the instrument’s history, a common and reversible update. Overall, this instrument has been well cared for and retains its historic character and charm.
